Clothing Ideas

The items of clothing above is just a quick example of the type/style of clothing which our artists could be wearing or something similar. This style of clothing is the match to what other indie bands could possibly dress like. Ensuring that we stick to styling our band members as "indie" as we possibly can will help us to create the look which we are going for. Indie styling could come across as old and retro looking which is another factor which we shall be trying to create. Giving the correct look to the audience is a very crucial part to the music video so we need to look into everything to do with this genre of music so the band members can be styled correctly. Also with the clothing and look of the artists it will then help the audience to identify what the genre is along with the music. One very obvious factor about this style is the artists looking fairly scruffy e.g messy hair, facial hair, untidy clothing. We shall try and suit all these areas of the look by finding the right people for the band and dressing them accordingly.

Potential Equipment

Camera

The camera which we potential could be using is a canon 6D.

We have chosen to use this camera as it is a reasonably easy to use and will give us the sort of shots and clips which we are looking for. This SLR video camera shoots in full HD video which will give us the best possibly quality music video which we need. shooting at 30 frames per seconds this will make this camera very suitable for our needs. The main reason for choosing to use this camera is because it is a small, compact camera which is easy to use. It isn't bulking or hard to use which will help use when coming to shot out video.

We shall be using a tripod with most of our filming unless we decided to give the hand held video effect on some shots. The reason that we will be using a tripod is to give a good steady balanced shot to give a professional look. This steady tripod can be adjust to different heights depending on which height and angled shot we are using for each shot. We will most likely be using this piece of equipment to shot long shots in our video.

another piece of equipment which we possible will be using is some form of lighting. This will make the shot look more effective and professional. If we were to use the white room in our video we may not need to use this lighting but we are most likely to be using them if we are located in a dark garden. This lighting will also balance out throughout the shots creating continuity through the whole music video.

Potential Location Mood Board

This mood board is showing the potential locations which we have and could use for our music video. Our first choice of location which we would like to use if possible is a plain white room as we feel this location would be most effective with our performance video. However it can be hard to get hold of a white room so we may have to settle with a different location. Our second choice of location would be a garden of some description at a dark time of day like in the images above. We feel this would give a very effect look to our video and will suit the indie scenestars style of music and could be just as successful as a white room. This type of location would be fairly easy to work with as we do have this on offer to us if needed. The third located which could also be used is a local village hall, this is our third option because we feel this would be difficult to make look good with our music video as the surroundings might not suit the genre of music as well.

Before finalising the location that we will be using we will try and find a place were we could use a white room but if this isn't possible we shall be looking at the two other possible locations which we could work with.

Our chosen track

Darwin Deez - Radar Detector.

You and I buy star maps and drive my car around Los Angeles
You and I buy star maps and ding dong ditch a televangelist

It's only been a week
But I know that you are mine to keep

You are a radar detector
I drive 1,000 miles an hour
I won't go on and on
But you are always looking out for me

You and I go shopping and find exactly what we're looking for
You and I go shopping and fall asleep inside the mattress store.

We cruise the neighborhood
But it's not supposed to feel this good

You are a radar detector
I drive 1,000 miles an hour
I won't go on and on
But you are always looking out for me because

You are a radar detector

You are a radar detector
I drive 1,000 miles an hour
I won't go on and on and on and
You are always looking out for me

When I'm driving around, you are a radar detector

Inspiration Video

Some of our bands video and name inspiration is coming from a pioneering Soviet Russian film director and film theorist called Eisenstein who is well known for his editing in silent films such as Battleship Potemkin. This particular film has an evolutionary editing sequence on the Odessa Steps, hence 'The Odessa Soviet'.

From this we can take costume ideas and some editing inspiration.

Conversation with Mr Smith

Myself and Tommy have decided to focus on an indie band performance video through a conversation with our teacher (Mr Smith). We now also realise that our video will be made to look almost amateur using a handheld camera and a small unprofessional looking set such as a garage or studio.

The reason why we have chose to do a performance video is because we both agreed that narrative or concept videos would be extremely difficult and performance is the one which we feel we could make look the best and is realistic to our lifestyle and the equipment we have access too. This is the easiest area to push for higher grades.

Audience profile

ALTERNATIVE - INDIE -

Indie Scenesters have a vast collection of records, new and old. They always have the newest and most current music on tap from a range of magazines and social networks etc. this audience are strongly dedicated to finding new music, especially that music that is from small obscure bands yet to really hit the big time. however these people are not Hipsters they are far from that in the way they live for music and strive to be ahead of the game. Hipsters on the other hand tend to follow suit with what other people are doing and like to dabble in new music.
Also our audience is no longer purely about indie rock bands like you expect, they have extended their music taste and knowledge to more than just a guitar sound with a generic male voiceThese Indie Scenesters are still aiming to get smaller less well known acts onto their playlists and still aim to be the lead figures in all genres of music fan base. With their now extended music taste they are always moving into different genres but the music they listen to currently includes artists such as Youth Lagoon, Beach House, Animal Collective, Kendrick Lamar and John Talabot, as well as old favourites like Caribou and Thom Yorke.

These are the type of people who like to be trendsetters but really do follow the fashion ideas set by the artists that they listen to. With this look both genders are wearing similar clothes, for example skinny jeans and a baggy shirt or tee. It never looks like they have put as much effort into their appearance than they actually have.

THE NATIONAL - SEA OF LOVE.

LYRICS.

Will you say you love me Jo?
How am I supposed to know?
When you go under the waste
What am I supposed to say?

I see people on the floor
They're slidin' to the sea
Can't stay here anymore
We're turning into thieves

If I stay here trouble will find me
If I stay here I'll never leave
If I stay here trouble will find me
I believe

Jo I'll always think of you
As the kind of child who knew
This was never gonna last
Oh Jo you fell so fast

Hey Jo sorry I hurt you, but they say love is a virtue don't they?
Hey Jo sorry I hurt you, but they say love is a virtue don't they?
Hey Jo sorry I hurt you, but they say love is a virtue don't they?
Hey Jo sorry I hurt you, but they say love is a virtue don't they?

I see people on the floor
They're slidin' to the sea
Can't stay here anymore
We're turning into thieves

I see you rushing now
Tell me how to reach you
I see you rushing now
What did Harvard teach you?

I see you rushing now
Tell me how to reach you
I see you rushing now
What did Harvard teach you?

I see you rushing now
Tell me how to reach you
I see you rushing now
What did Harvard teach you?

I see you rushing now
Tell me how to reach you
I see you rushing now
What did Harvard teach you?

LYRIC ANALYSIS.

...........

OVERVIEW.

This video is all taken in one shot from one angle, it looks easy t recreate but I think that it would be difficult to get all band members to stay focused for the whole video. Also we would need a group of people who know the words and/or how to play the instruments involved. Also I dont think we could get a small child to play the part in this video, however we can definitely take the idea of an unprofessional set and relaxed feel for our video.

This is not a typical performance video,it gets very boring as after 30 seconds or so you have seen all that you are going to see. The set makes it look amateurish and creates the appearance of a very real performance from the band and it feels almost like a home video.

BEADY EYE - BLUE MOON.

LYRICS.
Blue moon
You saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love on my own,

Blue moon
You saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love on my own,

Blue moon
You knew just what i was there for
You heard me saying a prayer
For someone i really could care for.

And suddenly there appeared before me
The only one my arms could ever hold
I heard someone whisper, "please, adore me"
And when i looked my moon had turned to gold.

Blue moon,
Now i'm no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart,
Without a love of my own
Without a love of my own,
LYRIC ANALYSIS.

As this song is a cover of Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart the words have a different meaning to what they did originally. Still the song is about being alone but it also relates strongly to Manchester City football club and how they are what he lives for. The lyrics are linked to the video through the beginning and end where Liam admires the shirt and wears it with pride.

OVERVIEW.
The blue moon song is written to unveil the 2011 Manchester city kit. (Lead singer Liam Gallaghers club) The start of the video is very much dedicated to the teams shirt but throughout the bulk of the video it is purely performance based. I like the open format of the room they're in but realise it is unrealistic that we could get a space like that. For example the lit flooring is hard to achieve without a large budget. Also they have a large band with 4 well suited members that would be hard for us to find due to the lack of willing people who have the right look.
Shots I think we can take from this video are panning shots of the band and also some close up on the lead singer to emphasise his role as a main man in the video. Another idea we could possibly take from this video is the use of quick shots through the band members and instruments. the mood set here is peaceful and light reflected in the colouring of the set and so on. It is atypical performance video set out to put the song lyrics first and visuals second.

Choosing the band

Finding members to be a part of our band is going to be a difficult. Making sure that every band member looks the part and suits the genre and style of music is very important. It can dramatically effect the success of the video if the band members aren't right for the style and genre.

We have to find people to be in our band who suit and look like the actually band whom play the song. That is why we need to think about this when picking our song to ensure we can find people who will look right. For example if we chose to work on a kasabian song we would probably struggle to find people to be in our band who look similar to the kasabian members as they have a particular look about themselves which we don't know a lot of people who have this same look. Where as we could chose to focus on a band like foals or passion pit and would probably find it easier to find people for our band who look similar.

By the end of the week

  • Research and planning.
  • Analyse a minimum of 3 music videos.
  • Decide on genre, song and band name.
  • Make twitter feed for band.
  • Create an artist biography.
  • Do research on target markets.

Introduction Post

During this year Jack Gogety and myself (Tommy Medland) will be working together and producing our A2 Media Music video. All our work produced including research and planning, final video will be posted onto this shared blog by Tommy and Jack.

Firstly we will be posting three detailed analysis's of three performance music videos. Then moving on to producing mood boards, a 25 word pitch and deciding on our genre of music an the song we will be focusing our video on. We will also decided on our band name and begin thinking about the band members we shall be using who will suit our genre and style of person for our performance music video. Hope you enjoy our work..
